Everyone says you need to volunteer at a big shelter, but the tiny thrift store on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie was the win today
I keep hearing that the only real way to help is signing up at a big nonprofit with a full training program and a two hour orientation. So last Tuesday I walked into a little church thrift store off Route 9 in Poughkeepsie instead, mostly because they had a sign on the door asking for two hours a week. The lady running it, Donna, handed me a rack of 40 donated coats and said just check every pocket before they go out. I found a folded $20 bill in the third coat, a set of car keys in the ninth, and a kid's tooth in a ziplock bag by number 30. Donna called the $20 guy and he came back that same afternoon, and he stood there holding it like it was a lot more than $20. Everyone pushes the big formal programs, but honestly folding coats and checking pockets for two hours did more for me than any signup sheet ever has. Has anyone else found that the small scrappy places beat the organized volunteer gigs?
