Fixed a leaking toilet flapper and it took 45 minutes for a 5 minute job

The rubber seal on the flapper was fine but the chain had a kink I couldn't see for 40 minutes. Anyone else spend way too long on something that should be dead simple?

Forty minutes chasing a kink in a chain sounds about right.

15 minutes is usually the max for me on a bad day. Past that you're probably dealing with a twisted link or a bent pin in the chain itself. I learned that the hard way after spending an hour on what I thought was just a stubborn kink. Turns out I had a small burr on the side plate catching every time. A quick file fixed it in like 2 minutes. Might be worth checking your chain for actual damage next time instead of just fighting the same kink over and over.
