My neighbor Bob told me to ignore the fertilizer schedule and I'm glad I did
Bob's been gardening for like 40 years and he saw me stressing over the exact dates on my tomato fertilizer bag. He said just wait until the first flowers show up, then feed them. I thought he was crazy but I tried it on half my plants anyway. The ones I waited to feed are way bushier and have more fruit than the ones I did on schedule. Has anyone else gotten advice that went against the label but worked out better?

Bob's advice is solid for most veggies, but one small thing - tomatoes actually need a little phosphorus at transplant time too (like bone meal), not just when flowers show. The bag schedule might be too rigid, but waiting until first flowers means you miss that early root boost. I do a light feed at planting, then wait for flowers, and my plants don't get that early yellowing some folks see.
