The after-school chaos went from a 20-minute screaming match to a 5-minute snack chat.

I started just sitting on the floor with a bag of pretzels instead of yelling for them to do homework, and after three weeks, my 6th graders actually started wandering over to talk. Has anyone else found that just changing your own energy totally shifts the vibe?

Oh man, I gotta push back on this whole "change your energy" thing... Sounds nice in theory but kids aren't parakeets. You're basically training them that ignoring their responsibilities gets them a snack and a chat instead of structure. My cousin tried this "zen parenting" approach and her kids just sat around waiting for the snack with no homework done at all. They figured out pretty quick that if they held out long enough, she'd cave and bring out the goldfish crackers. I think some kids just need the firm boundary first before they can relax into any kind of conversation... Pretzels aren't gonna teach them time management.

My neighbor does this same thing with her cranky parakeet and it works.
