Actually, it might do the opposite and attract them. The extra moisture could create a perfect spot for gnats to breed. You're probably better off trying something else.

Wait, can too much water really make it worse? I always thought keeping the soil dry was the main thing, but that point about extra moisture breeding them is a good one. I used to just let my plants get really dry between waterings, but I guess if you go too far and then drown them, you're just making a swamp for gnats. That actually makes a lot of sense now. I'm gonna be way more careful about how much I water from now on.
