My old CTO told me to build for scale on day one and it killed us
He insisted we needed microservices and Kubernetes before we even had 100 users, so I spent 6 months and $45k on infrastructure instead of talking to customers. Has anyone else had an advisor push a "big company" move way too early and watch the whole thing collapse?

Nah, we launched with a single server and scaled up later.

Oh wow, I actually just read a post on Hacker News about a company that did the opposite and regretted it! They went all in with a huge cluster from day one and ended up paying for a ton of unused capacity for months (which is money down the drain, basically). Your single server approach sounds way smarter for keeping costs low while you figure out if anyone even wants your product.
