Our POS system crashed on the busiest Saturday, the backup plan was worse

Last month the card reader died at 7pm on a 40 degree Saturday in Portland. We switched to the paper invoice pad, but nobody could read the manager's shorthand, so we had three angry couples walk out. Anyone else found a low tech backup that actually works when the tech fails?

...and honestly the moment your POS goes down you need to switch to a numbered ticket system, not a pad. Each customer gets a number, you write the total on a sticky note, they pay cash or you snap a photo of their card with your phone. We did this once and it saved our asses. The key is having a stack of pre-printed numbered slips in the back drawer, not some fancy backup that needs wifi or batteries. People get way less angry when they see you have a plan, even if it's ugly. Just have one person on the door with a marker and a notepad, that's it.
