PSA: That flashy pitch deck hid 8 months of fake metrics
Tbh I was skeptical of a startup called GridLoop last spring. They had this slick demo showing 40k users in Chicago, but when I dug into their own blog posts from a year ago, the numbers did not line up. They claimed a pivot to B2B after 6 months, but the real story was they burned $120k on ads with zero repeat customers. What convinced me to walk away was asking their former engineer at a meetup, he said the dashboard literally had a hardcoded test value. Has anyone else caught a startup faking traction before it collapsed?
Knew a guy who invested in a dog walking app that claimed 5,000 walks a month. Turned out the founder was walking the same three pugs around a loop and logging each lap as a separate customer. The investors only figured it out when they tried to book a walk and got a text back saying the pugs were tired... which was weird because it was a Saturday morning. The app still exists somehow though, just rebranded as a wellness tracker for pets. That whole thing taught me to always check if the numbers make sense in real life, not just on a screen.
