I finally stopped pulling injectors hot after a guy in Amarillo told me to let the engine sit overnight
I swapped injectors on a 6.7 Cummins last Tuesday and did the dumb thing I always do, yanked them while the head was still warm because the truck was needed back by 5. An old hand at the shop in Amarillo named Ray told me he lets every engine cool down overnight before he touches a single injector, and I rolled my eyes at first. Next morning two of my copper washers came out chewed up and I had a no-start on cylinder 4, exactly what he warned me about. Turns out heat soak makes the injector body grab the bore tighter, so you fight it and scar the seat. Anybody else let them sit a full day, or am I just slow at this?
That bit about heat soak making the body grab the bore is real, but what nobody talks about is how it messes with your torque reading on the hold down bolt too. You think you got it snug when it's warm, then it shrinks and you're either loose or you stretched the threads.
