My old shop lead in Tulsa said to skip the torque wrench on injector hold downs, and I finally looked up the actual spec
I always heard you can just snug injector hold downs by feel and they will be fine, and for years I did that because the lead guy at my first shop in Tulsa swore by it. Then a buddy lent me his factory service manual for a 5.9 Cummins, and the spec is 44 inch pounds, which is barely more than hand tight on a 3/8 ratchet, so I was actually overdoing it half the time and probably stretching those bolts. I checked a second manual for a Duramax and it was a similar low number with a specific sequence, not just run them down and call it good. In my experience the guys who brag about feel are usually the same ones who wonder why a copper washer starts weeping at 80k miles. Take this with a grain of salt since I only do this on the side, but I bought a cheap inch pound wrench and have not had a comeback since. Has anyone else caught a popular shortcut at their shop that was just plain wrong once you read the book?
The feel guys are always the loudest in the shop too. Doesn't matter if it's injectors or oil pans, someone is gonna swear the book is wrong because their grandpa never used a wrench. I don't get it, a torque wrench costs less than the parts you're about to wreck. Call it what it is, laziness with a story attached.
