My uncle swore by the 2 stroke Detroit trick, and he was dead right
My uncle ran a logging crew up near Prince George for 30 years and he always said if a screamin jimmy won't start, pull the valve cover and check for a stuck injector rack before you touch anything else. I laughed it off for years until my 6V53 quit on a haul last month, and 20 minutes in with a screwdriver I found the rack hung up on cylinder 3. Anybody got a better first check than that, or is he still right after all these years?
That line about your uncle laughing it off for years hits home. My old man was the same way about his 4-71 in an old dump truck, always hollering about the rack before anything else, and I figured he was just stuck in his ways. Then one cold morning it would not fire and after messing with fuel filters and bleeding lines for an hour, I popped the cover and sure enough the rack was hung. Twenty minutes with a screwdriver, just like you said. Those old timers earned their know how the hard way and it stings a bit when they turn out right.
