Shoutout to the old timer in Tulsa who showed me the plastic gauge trick back in 2011
When I started wrenching in '99 we checked bearing clearance with plastigauge and eyeballs, but by the time I met this guy 12 years later he had me using a dial bore gauge and micrometer combo that caught a .003 out of round my old method would have waved through, so what torque specs or measuring tricks did you pick up from somebody older that still beat the book?
You ever notice how the old timers always had some story behind their tricks, like where they learned it? Had an old boy down in Waco show me how he'd snug head bolts in three passes instead of the book's two, swore it kept the gasket from walking on old iron. Never saw it fail once, and I still do it that way today.
