Shoutout to the old timer who told me to use a zip tie to find a vacuum leak on a 7.3 Powerstroke
I spent a whole afternoon spraying starter fluid around the engine bay with no luck, but his trick of holding a thin zip tie in the suspected leak path and feeling for the pull found the cracked boot in about 30 seconds, so what's the strangest tool you've ever used to fix a diesel?

Ever tried using a piece of vacuum tubing as a stethoscope to find a bad injector? I cut a long section and held it to my ear, moving it around the valve cover till I heard the tick change. Saved me buying a mechanic's stethoscope for a one-time job.

That zip tie trick is a lifesaver. I've used a cigarette once to find a leak on an old Cummins.
