Man that sucks, I've been there. The cheap ones are always a gamble, but I'd expect an $80 tool to last more than two jobs. If you still have the broken piece, you might be able to weld a nut onto it and back it out that way, or try a slide hammer with some vice grips if you can get a bite.

You mentioned welding a nut onto the broken piece to back it out, but that only works if the snap is sticking out enough to weld onto. Most of the time when those cheap extractors snap, they break flush or even below the surface, so there's nothing left to grab. You'd be better off drilling it out with a left-handed drill bit first.
