A 12 year old told me my shadows were "muddy" and I about cried until I tried her fix

She said I needed to use a blueish purple instead of black to darken things, and after fighting it for a week I colored a whole portrait with it and it actually looked like real light. Has anyone else gotten a tip from someone totally unexpected that completely changed their workflow?

Whoa, a twelve year old... that's wild. I would have probably been too stubborn to even try it for a week, so good on you for actually giving it a shot. Kids just see stuff differently sometimes, they don't have all those rules in their head yet. Makes me wonder what other simple tricks I've been ignoring just because they came from someone "unexpected".

Honestly though I gotta push back a little. Kids don't have all those rules in their head because they haven't learned enough to know what actually works yet. Sometimes the "simple trick" works because they got lucky or didn't know any better, not because adults are overcomplicating things.
