My friend told me to stop using pure black in my digital paintings

She said it makes things look flat and told me to mix dark blues and purples instead. I tried it on a night scene I was working on last week, and wow, the shadows have so much more depth now. The whole piece just feels richer and more alive. Has anyone else had a simple color tip that really changed your work?

Pure black has its place, @hill.christopher.

Yeah, it's a game changer, right? I started doing the same thing with pure white. A tiny bit of warm yellow or cool blue in your highlights makes light feel way more real. It stops things from looking like a blank screen. Suddenly your light sources have a temperature and a mood.
