PSA: use a solid gray layer set to Overlay to check your values

I kept painting mud without knowing why until a guy in a Discord call last Tuesday showed me the gray overlay trick in Photoshop. Now I can see my lights and darks instantly, anyone else have a value check trick that actually works?
