The guy running the tablet demo at Art Basel Miami told me my digital piece looked like a screensaver, and he was right
I was at Art Basel Miami back in December showing a piece I spent 6 weeks on, a generative thing with slow moving gradients. This guy at a Wacom booth watched it for maybe 15 seconds and said it looked like a Windows screensaver from 2003, then just walked off. I wanted to be mad but the longer I sat with it, the more I knew he nailed it. I had no focal point, no tension, just pretty colors sliding around. Since then I force myself to thumbnail every piece in black and white first, and if it dies at 200px wide, it dies. Last month I scrapped 4 finished pieces that looked fine at full size but had nothing going on when shrunk down. Curious if anyone else has had a random stranger at a show say the one thing that stuck with you more than any class ever did.
