My first Google Ads campaign in 2013, $500 gone in 4 days because I had broad match on "free"
I was sitting in my apartment in Austin watching the click report and every search was people hunting for free stuff, so I paused the whole thing and rebuilt it with exact match and negative keywords. Did broad match used to be this much of a money pit for everyone back then, or was it just me?

Man, broad match back then was basically Google handing your card to every random searcher with a pulse. What got you was the word "free," because the system had zero clue about intent and just happily matched you to every coupon hunter on the planet. Exact match plus a fat negative keyword list was the only way to survive, and honestly that combo still holds up today.
