A guy in a Chiang Mai coworking space told me to book flights 6 weeks out, saved me $340
Honestly I almost ignored him. Some random dude in the corner of a coworking spot in Nimman kept talking about how he never books more than 6 weeks ahead, and I figured he was just lucky. I was about to fly Bangkok to Lisbon for a visa run and the price was sitting at $780. He said wait, set a google flight alert, and check on Tuesdays. So I did. Six weeks later it dropped to $440. Ngl I felt dumb for not trying it sooner. I've now done this for three different routes, Kuala Lumpur to Tbilisi, Medellin to Mexico City, and every time the price went down closer to the date. The only catch is you can't be picky about exact days. Has anyone else found a sweet spot for how far out they book, or does it totally depend on the region?

Back in 2019 I was stuck in Cusco waiting on a Bolivian visa and met this older Aussie guy named Graham who swore by booking exactly 53 days out. Not 6 weeks, not 2 months, exactly 53 days. He had this whole notebook with fares written down going back years. I laughed at him but then watched a Lima to Santiago flight drop from $410 to $260 on day 53 like clockwork. Tried it twice after that and it worked once, failed the other time. So yeah the region matters but airline sales cycles might matter even more.
