A hostel host in Medellin asked why I pay $45 a month for a VPN I barely use
I actually pulled up my card statement and counted, that's $540 since I started this lifestyle. She just uses her bank's free one and has never had a problem, which made me feel like a real genius. Anyone else running their whole setup on free tools and doing fine?
Depends what you're actually protecting against. On hostel wifi in some countries, yeah a free bank VPN might be fine for logging into your account, but if you're doing banking, remote work, or anything with client data, that ten bucks a week starts looking cheap. I paid for one for two years straight and barely touched it too, but the one time I needed it at 2am in a sketchy airport network it saved me. Most people never need it, that's why it feels dumb, until it isn't.
