Got food poisoning in Chiang Mai 3 weeks ago and now I'm weird about street food
Spent 2 days hugging the toilet at a guesthouse near Tha Phae Gate after eating some chicken skewers, which cost me a client call and about $60 in rebooking. Part of me says just roll with it and eat where the locals eat, that's the whole point of this life. The other part says I should stick to spots with big crowds and high turnover, even if it feels less "authentic." Where do you all draw the line with street food when you're working and can't afford to be sick?
Man, I read a thing from some travel nurse once that stuck with me. She said the real rule is heat and speed, not crowds. Like food that comes off a hot grill or out of boiling oil right in front of you is way safer than stuff sitting in a tray all day, even at a busy stall. Chicken skewers are risky because poultry goes bad fast and if it sits out raw before grilling you're done. Pork and veggie stuff tends to be safer bets in my book. Also I stopped doing street meat on days I have calls, just saves the stress.
