My buddy told me to always book a place for a full month, even if I'm only staying two weeks.

He said it was cheaper and less hassle than moving around, so I tried it in Medellin last month. I ended up paying double for a place I barely used because a work trip came up, and I felt stuck. Does anyone have a good rule for when the monthly discount is actually worth it?

Wait, your friend's host had a strict cancel policy even on a month-long stay? That's crazy to me. I thought the whole point of paying up front was getting some flexibility if things change. Did you try to negotiate a partial refund or anything when your work trip came up? I'd be so mad paying for an empty place because of a policy like that.

Honestly that "paying double for a place I barely used" thing hits home. My friend did the exact same in Lisbon, booked a month for the discount but her remote work schedule blew up. She was basically funding an empty apartment for two weeks because the host's cancel policy was so strict. Tbh I only go monthly now if I'm 100% sure my plans are locked in, or if the discount is just stupid good. Otherwise the risk of getting stuck like that isn't worth the small savings.
