Went from hostels to a $40/night room in Chiang Mai, big shift in how I work
Used to think staying in hostels was the only way to keep costs low while traveling. Been at it for maybe 3 years now, bouncing between dorms in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. But last month I finally caved and booked a private room with a desk for $40 a night out here in Chiang Mai. Honestly, the difference is huge. In hostels I'd be hunched over my laptop on a bunk bed or in some loud common area, getting maybe 4 hours of solid work before my back gave out. Now I actually wake up, sit at a proper desk, and knock out my client stuff by noon. Then I can explore guilt free. I still miss the social side of hostels though, met some great people in dorms in Hanoi. Is the extra cost worth it for a private room as a digital nomad, or do most folks just deal with the chaos to save money? Curious what others do.
Booked a private room in Da Nang last year after 8 months of dorms and it changed everything. Getting real work done by noon beats saving 15 bucks a night when you're too fried to actually earn. Just grab a hostel with a bar for the social stuff at night, best of both.
