Why does nobody talk about the visa run buddy who changes how you travel?
Back in 2019 I was doing a border run from Chiang Mai to Vientiane on a cramped overnight bus, and I got stuck next to this older guy named Ron who had been location independent since dial-up days. When I complained about having to leave every 90 days, he pulled out a paper notebook with 12 countries sketched in it and showed me how he planned his whole year around cheap border hops instead of panicking at the last minute. He circled a spot in Malaysia and just said "book the $18 flight early and you get a whole weekend out of it" (I still do this). That one notebook chat saved me probably $400 in rushed flights over the next year, and I never even got his last name. Anyone else have a random stranger at a border crossing teach them something they still use?
That notebook thing is the real lesson here, not just the cheap flights. Ron was basically doing what travel hacking blogs charge money to teach, but he figured it out with a pen and some patience. What makes it work is that you stop treating visa runs like emergencies and start treating them like normal trips you plan months ahead. Once you flip that switch, the border hop becomes the vacation instead of the annoying thing between vacations. I started keeping a similar list a few years back and the trick is really just watching the calendar and booking the second you see a decent price. The random stranger part is what gets me though, because those bus and border chats always seem to hand out the advice that sticks better than anything you read online. Maybe because the person telling you has actually lived it and isn't trying to sell you a course.
