I used to think self advocacy groups were a waste of time, then I sat in on one in Columbus
A friend talked me into sitting in on a self advocacy group meeting in Columbus 3 months ago. I had always figured the real work happens in courtrooms and policy offices, not in a church basement with coffee and name tags. But watching 12 people prep one member for his benefits hearing taught me more about rights than any pamphlet out there. They knew the appeal deadlines cold and made him practice saying no to the reviewer. Anyone else changed their mind about where advocacy actually gets done?
