My daughter asked why her school has a ramp but the library downtown doesn't, and I didn't have a good answer
My daughter uses a wheelchair and she asked me that question on Saturday while we were waiting outside the downtown library in Fresno. I told her some buildings are just old, but she pointed out that the school got its ramp only 4 years ago after parents pushed for it. That made me sit with something I usually brush off, which is that access mostly shows up when people make noise, not because it's the right thing. I've been doing this advocacy stuff for a while and I still catch myself treating ramps and elevators like favors instead of basics. She's 11 and she already gets it better than I did at 30. How do you all explain this stuff to your kids without making it sound hopeless?
