Chain snapped mid-ride, turns out it was my fault after all
Last Tuesday out on the river trail my chain let go at mile 9, right when I was pushing hard up the incline. It broke clean through a pin that I had reconnected two weeks earlier using a quick link, but I never checked the wear on the rest of the chain. Turns out the stretch was way past the 0.75% marker, so the new link just got torqued apart. I replaced the whole chain and cassette for $68 and now I carry a chain checker tool in my saddle bag. Has anyone else had a quick link fail because the old chain was too worn to match it?

The same thing happened to me but with a rear derailleur instead of a chain. I put a new cable on and shifted fine for a day, then it just snapped mid shift and the whole thing ate itself into the spokes. Turns out the old housing was so rusted inside that the new cable was grinding against it the whole time. I felt like a fool because I checked everything except the one piece that actually moves the most. Now I replace cables and housing together as a pair, no exceptions. A chain checker is smart too, but honestly the lesson is the same, the cheap part kills the expensive part every single time.
