Grease on disc brake rotors isn't always a disaster
I keep seeing people say you have to throw away pads and rotors the second they get grease on them. Back in 2019 at a shop in Portland, a mechanic showed me you can actually sand the pads lightly and clean the rotor with isopropyl alcohol to save them. I've done it three times now on my own bike and they work fine after a proper bed-in. Has anyone else tried this instead of replacing everything?

Used to be all-in on trashing rotors if they got any grease, thought it was the only safe way to go. Your Portland mechanic trick actually makes a ton of sense, did it to a set last month and they bedded in fine with zero noise. Definitely changed my mind on how careful you really gotta be with this stuff.

Heard that @the_derek, I was the same way until a buddy at a shop showed me you can just hit em with brake cleaner and scuff em up a bit. Did it on my daily last fall when I got grease happy with the caliper slide pins, been dead quiet ever since. Feels good not tossing a perfectly good set of rotors over a dumb mistake.
