Had a chat with a guy at the bike coop who said grease is just a suggestion, not a rule

He told me most people overpack bearings and that a thin film does more than a glob, and after cleaning my hubs last week with way less grease they spin smoother than ever - has anyone else found less is actually more with bike lubrication?

The bike coop guy was dead on, seriously. First time I over-packed my hubs I could barely spin the wheel by hand before I even put it on the frame. After a buddy showed me just a tiny smear on each bearing, everything rolled way smoother and my wheels coast forever now. Grease is mostly there to keep dirt out and stop rust, not to fill every gap like a jam sandwich. Less is definitely more, especially with modern sealed bearings that come pre-lubed from the factory anyway.
