Had an old bike mechanic show me how to true a wheel by ear

Last spring at a co-op in Portland, this guy named Dave spent 10 minutes listening to my rear wheel spin and then fixed a wobble I'd been ignoring for months just by tightening two spokes. Has anyone else picked up weird diagnostic tricks from just watching someone work?

The first time I tried one of those wheels I thought it was just pure random chance, honestly. But after watching a few spins closely I realized there's a real science to the timing and target selection that I totally missed.
