Old bike shop guy showed me how to true a wheel with a zip tie

Went into a tiny shop in Tucson last month to grab a spoke wrench. Owner was probably 70, hands covered in grease. I mentioned my rear wheel wobbled like crazy after a curb hit. He laughed, grabbed a zip tie, and zip tied it to the fork leg. Then he cut the tail so it barely touched the rim. Spun the wheel and pointed at the spot where it clicked. Said "that's your high spot, file it down or tighten the spoke opposite." Spent 20 minutes watching him work. I've watched YouTube videos for years and never got it that clear. He charged me $4 for the wrench and wouldn't take a tip. Now I true my own wheels with a zip tie and a spoke wrench I bought for $12. Has anyone else learned a simple shop trick that made you feel dumb for not figuring it out sooner?
