Rant: the old guy at the co-op in Tucson showed me one trick with a spoke wrench and it finally clicked
Last Saturday I was truing a wobbly rear wheel at the bike co-op on 4th Ave and this retired mechanic named Sal watched me fight it for 20 minutes before he grabbed the wrench and said 'you're chasing the wobble, find the tight spoke first.' He had me squeeze pairs of spokes to feel the tension, and sure enough one spoke near the valve was cranked way tighter than the rest, and loosening it a quarter turn fixed what I'd been fighting for an hour. So my question is, does anyone else here tension by feel before touching the wrench, or do you go straight to a truing stand every time?
