Spent $60 on a Park chain checker after using a ruler for 5 years

I used to just eyeball chain wear with a 12 inch ruler and call it good, figured it was close enough for commuting. Finally bought the CC-4 at a shop in Portland and realized my chains were shot at half the mileage I thought. Anybody else find the cheap methods are way off compared to the real tool?
