Swore by my chain tool until a shop guy proved me wrong

I've been popping chains with the same cheap tool for 5 years, always figured a pin was a pin. Last month a mechanic at a shop in Denver watched me break a link and said 'you're hammering the pin out at the wrong angle, that's why it keeps bending.' He took over for 30 seconds and it slid out clean. I bought a proper chain breaker that same week, and honestly the difference is night and day. Anyone else had a tool they defended for ages that turned out to be the problem?

Honestly, a pin is a pin unless it's really bent. Sounds like the Denver guy just had a steadier hand and you were in a hurry. Cheap tools can be fine, it's mostly about how you use them.
