Warning: I cranked my quick releases way too tight for two years and a $12 skewer finally taught me
Last Tuesday I was swapping the rear wheel on my commuter before work and the skewer snapped right at the nut when I gave it my usual gorilla twist. I stood there in my kitchen holding two pieces of metal, and it hit me that I'd been treating quick releases like axle bolts this whole time, just cranking them down until my hand hurt. The lever is supposed to flip over with firm palm pressure and leave a light imprint, not need both thumbs and a prayer. I picked up a new skewer at the shop on 4th Street for $12 and the guy showed me the imprint trick on the spot. Anyone else grow up thinking tighter equals safer on QR levers?
