Watched a guy in Portland fix a hub with a stick and a shoelace on the side of the road last month

I was all about buying the $60 Park Tool cone wrenches until I saw him tweak a loose bearing cone with a twig and a leather bootlace in under two minutes, which made me realize I've been overthinking half my roadside repairs; has anyone else stumbled on a weird field fix that changed how you pack your kit?

Is riding so unpredictable that you really need to be fixing cones on the side of the road? I mean, how often does that happen to you before you just check the bearings at home?

@taylor174 Do you really think road grit doesn't eat bearings faster than checking them at home can predict, lol?
