Am I the only one who thinks ugly tomato varieties are the only ones worth growing?
People at my local garden club keep pushing me to grow pretty red beefsteaks, but I think the weird ones taste better and nobody can convince me otherwise. Last summer I planted Green Zebras, Black Krims, and a lumpy heirloom called Costoluto Genovese, and the ugly ones made the best sandwiches by far. I read on a seed company blog that there are over 10,000 tomato varieties out there, and most grocery stores only carry about 4 of them. That stat blew my mind because we are missing out on so much flavor just to get perfect looking fruit. A guy at the Des Moines farmers market told me his best seller every year is a wrinkled purple tomato that looks like a deflated balloon. So why do we still act like a smooth round tomato is the goal? What is the strangest looking veggie in your garden that turned out to be a total winner?
