My mutant sunflower scarecrow actually rotted after 3 weeks of rain

I built this scarecrow with a real sunflower head sewn onto a burlap body back in early June. After that crazy downpour we had in Portland for three straight weeks, the whole thing turned into a moldy mess and collapsed. I ended up replacing the head with a plastic Halloween skull I found at Goodwill for $2. Has anyone else had issues with organic materials falling apart in wet climates?

Huh, I used to be all about natural materials for this kind of stuff. Figured it was more authentic or whatever. But your story makes me think I was wrong. I had a dried corn stalk arrangement I put on my porch last fall, looked great for about two weeks until it rained and basically turned into a slimy mess. My wife made me throw it out before it started dripping on the welcome mat. Now I just buy the plastic ones from the hardware store, they last forever.

a real sunflower head sewn onto a burlap body" oh man, that is both beautiful and cursed. I tried something similar once with dried corn husks on a wire frame for a fall display. They looked amazing for like a week then the squirrels tore them apart and used them for nesting material. Also my neighbor's kid thought it was a real person and screamed. Now I just stick with plastic gourds and those fake spider webs that come in a can. Portland weather is no joke for anything that was once alive.
