Saw a guy at Comic Con who spent $800 on a 3D printed helmet that looked worse than my $40 EVA foam one
Last month at Comic Con I ran into a dude wearing a Mandalorian helmet he said cost him 800 bucks from some online prop shop, and the paint was already chipping at the edges. My foam build took me maybe 12 hours total and 40 dollars in materials, and three people asked if mine was the store bought one. Now I keep going back and forth on whether resin printing is actually worth the money for helmets or if it's just hype from people who don't want to learn foam shaping. The detail on resin is insane, no argument there, but the weight and the fragility and the cost of the printer plus resin plus ventilation setup adds up fast. Foam is cheap and light and you can wear it all day at a con without your neck dying, but it can look soft if you don't seal it right. I honestly don't know which way to tell new builders to go anymore. What did you all start with, and did you ever switch sides?
Haha I started with foam, messed up a helmet so bad it looked like a melted traffic cone, then ran back to foam anyway. The resin hype is real but my neck and my wallet both vote foam.
