Tried using dollar store foam board for a Warhammer 40k shoulder pad

I thought it would be trash but I grabbed a pack for $2.50 anyway. It actually cut cleaner than the $15 stuff from the craft store and held up fine after three coats of mod podge. Has anyone else tried super cheap materials and been surprised?

Three coats of mod podge on dollar store foam board? That's wild. I've been using the cheap stuff for terrain bases and never thought to try it on armor parts. The fact that it cut cleaner than the $15 stuff is what gets me - most of the time you get what you pay for with foam. Did you have to sand it at all before the mod podge or did it just take the coating straight up?

@rowanbennett No sanding, it just took the coating straight up! I did give it a quick wipe with a damp cloth to get any dust off first. Honestly the cheap stuff was way more forgiving than I expected. What kind of armor parts have you been making with your foam?
