Appreciation post: I called those $12 stick-on under-desk lights a gimmick, then I ate my words
I have a cheap IKEA desk in my spare room in Tulsa with zero outlets nearby, so I laughed at those $12 rechargeable stick-on lights for a solid 6 months. My wife grabbed a two pack anyway and stuck one under the desk lip. Last week I was rerouting a power strip in the dark and it lit up everything, one charge lasted 11 days on the low setting. Now I run both, one for cables and one over the keyboard, and I actually see what I am doing when I fish a USB cable behind the tower. Turns out the cheap magnetic ones hold fine if you wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol first, mine have not fallen once in 4 months. Anyone here tried the motion sensor models, do they eat the battery faster than the plain switch ones?
Had the same setup in my last place, no outlets on that wall at all so everything ran off extension cords. I skipped the motion sensor ones for the same reason you're asking, figured they'd trigger every time I walked past and burn through charges. Went with plain switches and a two pack, one under the desk and one in the closet. Fourteen months later both still hold a charge for about a week if I leave them on low. The trick for me was not trusting the sticky pad, I used the little screws that came in the box on the desk side and kept the magnet strip on the light itself. Zero falls since.
