Painted my desk black and regretted it for 2 weeks - here's what fixed it
I tried that cheap acrylic enamel from the hardware store and it looked terrible. Switched to a single coat of matte furniture paint from a local shop and the finish is actually solid now - anyone else find paint brands that work better on MDF?

Three cans of that cheap spray paint and my whole garage smelled like a chemical plant for a week. I still had brush marks showing through on the edges. Ended up sanding the whole thing down with 220 grit and using a roller with some Behr Marquee I had leftover from my kitchen cabinets. Night and day difference, like painting with butter instead of glue.

Right on, @karenhenderson hit the nail on the head with that Behr Marquee tip. I actually saw a video from a furniture flipper on YouTube saying the same thing about using high quality wall paint on MDF with a foam roller. The cheap stuff really is like painting with glue, it just gunks up and dries weird. Sanding it down with 220 grit was the part I was dreading but it makes all the difference for that smooth factory look. Glad you got yours sorted out, nothing worse than staring at a rough desk for two weeks.
