PSA: my neighbor said cheap cable trays ruin your desk's balance, but others swear by them

My neighbor Tim fixed his whole setup with a $15 IKEA cable tray under a light desk, and he said it wobbled so bad he almost lost a monitor. But on a local forum, someone argued cheap trays work fine if you screw them into studs instead of just particle board. Which side do you buy for a budget build?

Oh man, this brings back a memory. I actually read a review once where a guy tested like six different cheap cable trays under a heavy oak desk and only two of them held up. The ones that failed were all the super thin metal ones that just bend under weight. So I think the neighbor might be onto something about the balance thing, but it depends on your desk material. Particle board is the real enemy here, not the tray itself. If your desk is solid wood or you screw into a stud like that forum person said, a cheap tray probably works fine.

Particle board is the real enemy" could be my autobiography title honestly @alicea26, I've lost that war twice.
