Shoutout to the old library reading rooms for inspiring my desk layout
Last month I was killing time at the downtown main branch while waiting for my car to get an oil change. Found this quiet reading room I hadn't been in since college. Big windows, warm wood tables, lamps on every desk. Nobody had a laptop out. Just people reading and writing with pens. Something about the way the light fell made me realize how harsh my home setup is. I've got that blue led strip from Amazon throwing cold light everywhere. Now I'm building a monitor shelf with a warm gooseneck lamp clamped to it. Hoping for that same calm feeling. Anyone else get ideas from weird places like libraries or coffee shops?

Friend of mine accidentally got her whole room redone because of a library trip. She sat down at this old oak table in the local town library and realized she couldn't stop staring at the grain pattern in the wood. Now she's got this massive reclaimed wood slab acting as her desk, all her cables hidden under a custom routed channel. She said she spent like two hours just running her palm over the wood grain before she even sat down to work.

Maybe it's just me, but spending two hours touching wood grain before working sounds a little much. There's a difference between appreciating a nice piece of furniture and basically meditating on it before you do anything else. I guess I'd just settle for a normal desk from the store and get on with my day.
