Spilled coffee on my surge protector and it nearly started a fire

I was at my home desk in Scottsdale last Tuesday, reaching for my mug, and bumped it right onto the power strip under my monitor. The whole thing sparked and smoked for like 5 seconds before I yanked the plug out of the wall. Now I keep all my electronics on a raised shelf and use a cheap waterproof mat under my drinks. Anyone else had a close call with liquids near their setup?

Yeah, "nearly started a fire" is no joke. A buddy of mine had an old power strip by his desk and a soda can tipped over, it sparked and melted the plastic around one outlet before he could even react. Scary stuff.

I read somewhere that surge protectors can catch fire even without liquid spills if they're old or overloaded. Good call on getting everything off the floor.
