The floating shelf vs monitor arm debate hit me hard this weekend

I spent all Saturday trying to decide if I should mount my monitors on floating shelves or go with a dual monitor arm setup in my home office. Went with the monitor arm from Amazon for $45 because the shelves would have cost $30 plus hardware. Now my desk feels way cleaner but I keep bumping my knuckles on the arm base when I type - anyone else run into that issue with their setup?

I got that same cheap arm from Amazon and honestly I had to stick a little felt pad under the base just to stop my hand from barking on it every time I reached for the spacebar. The shelf option would have looked nicer but you saved yourself the headache of drilling into studs and hoping the brackets hold up long term. How far back from the edge of your desk did you mount the arm clamp? I found that sliding mine about 2 inches further back than the instructions said made a huge difference for my typing comfort. Also what size monitors are you running? I bet the weight balance is different between a 24 inch and a 27 inch which changes how much the arm sticks out.

...and here I thought the only thing cheap about that arm was the price, not the real estate it takes up on my desk. I mounted it about an inch and a half back from the edge, but now I'm wondering if I should have just bolted it to my forehead for better ergonomics. Running a pair of 24 inch screens, so the balance is basically a constant reminder that I should have spent the extra 20 bucks, right?
