Why does nobody talk about how cheap monitor arms can wreck your desk over time?

I was reading a thread on Reddit last week and someone mentioned that a $30 gas spring arm can crack a particle board desk within like 8 months because of the clamp pressure. I checked my own setup and sure enough there's a tiny hairline crack forming right where the clamp sits. Now I'm wondering if it's worth spending $100+ on a nicer arm with a bigger clamp plate, or just reinforcing the desk with a piece of wood. Anyone else deal with this or am I overthinking it?

Didn't a woodpecker just peck at the wood, not drill a hole into it?

Wish I'd known that before my cheap arm slowly drilled a hole in my desk like a passive aggressive woodpecker.
