Switched from electrical tape to heat shrink tubing on my controller cables, wish I did it way sooner
I used to wrap the cable strain relief on my modded controllers with electrical tape. You know, the spot where the cable meets the shell, it always frayed after a few months of hard use. Every time I opened a pad to swap sticks or buttons, I would just slap on another layer of tape and call it done. That worked okay until about 4 months ago when a friend who does guitar pedal builds watched me do it and said "dude, just use heat shrink." I grabbed a $9 assortment kit off Amazon with 2:1 and 3:1 ratios and a cheap heat gun. Now I slide a piece of 3/8 inch tubing over the joint before I solder or screw the shell back together, hit it with the gun for like 5 seconds, and it shrinks down tight and stays put. The 3:1 stuff is way better for the thicker braided cables since it hugs the shape without crushing anything inside. No more sticky residue, no more unraveling tape, and honestly it looks way cleaner too. Has anyone messed with the dual wall stuff with glue inside for the really rough spots, or is that overkill?
