Warning: Hot glue can actually melt cheap controller shells if you add too much too fast

I was modding my Xbox One controller at my desk last night, dropped a gob of hot glue on the D-pad area, and within 10 seconds the plastic warped so bad the button wouldn't seat right, has anyone else ruined a shell this way?

The plastic on the Xbox One controller isn't actually cheap, it's ABS which has a pretty low melting point compared to other plastics. Hot glue guns can easily hit 350 degrees and that's way more than enough to soften ABS. You probably just had the glue too hot or you let it sit in one spot too long. Try using a lower temp glue gun next time or put a thin layer of electrical tape on the shell where you're adding glue. That tape will act as a heat barrier and save you from ruining another controller. Have you tried any other heat-proof tricks for modding these shells?

Man, @karenhenderson coming in with the science and saving my next controller from looking like a melted mess. I tried the electrical tape trick on my last shell mod and it worked way better than I expected, but I still managed to leave a glue gun sitting on the tape too long and it bubbled up like a bad sunburn. Guess I need to learn the difference between "low temp" and "I'm just impatient." Ever try using a hairdryer on low to soften the glue from the back instead?
